DJ Hero controller mod help (please)

so after much thought and fighting the idea, I recently picked up DJ Hero.
----RANT ALERT! this part not important to what I need help with----
I consider myself a DJ. I am well skilled in the art of beat mixing and fair at scratching (though I dare not attend any competitions). I learned on vinyl with two second-hand Gemini turntables that totally sucked, but used magnetic cartridges and had pitch fade (+/-8%), though they were belt drive and very touchy. my first mixer was a Gemini PS-676 Pro - 3 channels with built in 12 second sampler. I later upgraded to a pair of second-hand technics 1200s that were well worn in and was eventually able to buy a second hand Pioneer DJM-600 mixer (the club standard at the time). Later I bought a pair of newer, less worn technics 1200 MD3s that were in much better condition. and finally I was able to buy brand new, a pair of technics 1200 MK5s. then I sold it all and built a bad ass Core 2 quad 9650 PC with a bunch of stuff, in a 19" rack mount case to go in my 19" rack. and then later I bought a brand new Pioneer DJM-800 mixer --the now club standard. and somewhere after my first set of technics 1200s I picked up a dual CD deck with pitch control up to +/- 16%. and the newest addition to my setup is Mixxx -- a freeware software for DJing with audio files, and I custom built a setup so that Mixxx can use the Serato timecode records for control. I don't wanna hear about how DJ Hero is not real DJing, and if I wanna spin, I should do it for real. unlike Guitar Hero, DJ Hero comes quite close to the real thing, especially in the later mix sets on expert. I have much more to say on DJ Hero both positive and negative, but that is for another thread in another place.
----/RANT -----
I would like to modify the crossfader on the mixer portion of the controller to only trigger left or right position when moved all the way to the corresponding side. actual DJ mixers such as the DJM-600 and 800 have switches to set the type of cross fader action desired from linear to sharp. for use such as DJ Hero and scratching on a real setup, a DJ requires a sharp taper on the cross fader (unless you're Qbert and can scratch with the volume faders).
the crossfader in the DJ Hero controller appears to be much like a normal corssfader on any cheap mixer -- a potentiometer. I figured I can just clip the wires and run it to a circuit that will detect the minimum and max values and control a digital potentiometer of similar values to adjust automatically as needed.
but I thought I read somewhere that it may be as simple as just putting a few components on the existing potentiometer to change it's behavior. any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
TL;DR
how do I adjust the taper on a potentiometer from being linear/not-so-linear to be sharp?
